In early January, the online travel marketplace KOALA did some research to find out what are the future travel trends amongst Americans.

KOALA did some heavy leg-work and analyzed search data from Google to find out the top destinations Americans have searched for over the past six months.

Puerto Rico came up as the top destination searched for by Americans with a total of 580,100 searches.

Mexico came in second place with 476,690 total searches; the Maldives came third with 312,200 total searches.

With Puerto Rico being just about four hours from cities such as New York, Dallas, and Philadelphia, it’s no wonder it makes for an attractive destination. When broken down state by state, KOALA found Puerto Rico to be trending with states on the East Coast.

Additionally, Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and thus Americans don’t need a passport to travel here.

However, according to the New York Times’ Puerto Rico Coronavirus Map and Case Count, there were 6 new coronavirus deaths and 218 new cases reported on January 31 with an average of 371 cases per day.

This puts Puerto Rico’s total cases at 127,239 and deaths at 1,829
